Mythbusting Your Beliefs About Marketing to Teens

Session Details

Have you ever wondered what prospective teens are thinking when they visit your website? What pages are most important? Do they click through and sign up? And what about the materials you send them? Are they read or recycled? For the past three years, we conducted surveys with teens and asked them for their frank opinions and reactions to the recruitment materials they receive from colleges and universities — emails, print materials, websites, texts, and other communications. And their responses have often surprised us. Then, we asked the same questions of you and other college admission, web, and marcomm staff.

In this presentation, we'll share our biggest surprises about what teens really pay attention to and what marketers know (and didn't know) about their likes and dislikes. Some of what we learned confirms what other researchers have shared. For example, we confirmed how open students are to receiving text messages from colleges and how many institutions are still missing the boat. In this presentation, we'll discuss findings about six topics that really surprised us: texting, social media, video, mobile apps, virtual tours/campus tours and email.

Michael Stoner, co-founder and the president of mStoner, has served hundreds of education institutions, nonprofits, and businesses on four continents. He co-edits the Call to Action blog about higher ed marketing, branding, and communications on Inside Higher Ed.

Our Ever-Evolving Use of Cadence

Session Details

Similar to the stages of a monomyth, Cadence has followed a storyline akin to that of a hero’s journey for Saint Michael’s College. The typical hero’s journey consists of 4 major parts and 12 stages starting with a call to adventure followed by trials, tribulations, and transformation and concluding with a return of lessons learned. Jake will share his institution’s story and experiences through the lens of a hero’s journey, discussing successes and failures through categories such as collecting opt-ins, communicating with both students and parents, and best practices.
